The Word of God
Scriptures to be used:
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17
- Hebrews 4:12-13
- 2 Peter 1:20-21
- John 8:31-32
- Mark 7:1-8
- John 12:47-48
- Acts 17:10-12
Purpose of study:
To help people see the importants of the Bible, and that it need to become the “standard of our lives”
2 Timothy 3:16-17
- All scripture is “God breathed”- ALL scripture comes from the “breath” of God… therefore we should hold to ALL of it.
- The Bible is useful… it is suppose to be used in our lives. It’s not a coffee table book!
- It’s useful for: teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
- The Bible will “equip us for every good work”. The Bible is complete, lacking nothing.
Hebrews 4:12-13
- The word of God is “living and active”… again; it is suppose to be USED in our lives.
- It penetrates our lives, it hurts. It cuts our hearts, and cuts out the sin in our lives.
- Nothing is hidden from God’s sight… scary isn’t it? We can’t hide from God! He knows our heart, no sense in just going through the motions, either give it your whole heart or don’t fake it, God knows the real deal.
John 8:31-32
- Jesus is talking to Jews who “believed in him” (this was a rare thing, most Jews thought that Jesus was crazy, that he was contradicting God’s Law).
- He tells them, its not enough to just believe in me… you must “hold to my teachings”, then you will know the truth, “and the truth will set you free”
- Where do we find Jesus teachings today? (Obviously, in the Bible)
- It takes holding to the Bible to find Jesus teachings, then you will find out the truth, and the truth will set you free.
- It takes “obeying” the Bible to be right with God.
Mark 7:1-8
- These Jews were following man made traditions and questioned Jesus about why he and his men were not holding to the traditions (these traditions became so important to these people that they even questioned Jesus about it).
- One thing we see is that Jesus wasn’t all about holding to a bunch of traditions, but about holding to the words of God.
- Jesus called these people “hypocrites” (some one who says one thing and does another)
- Ask: How do we “honor God with our lips, but our hearts stay far from him?”
- Ask: Do you know of any man-made traditions in churches today?
- Jesus tells these people, that they have put aside the word of God in order to observe there own traditions… this is still going on today in churches.
John 12:47-48
- This is why studying the Bible, reading it, knowing it, obeying it; this is why it is so important.
- Jesus tells us “the very words I spoke will condemn us on the last day.”
- Ask: Where do we find “the very words” Jesus spoke… in the Bible right?
- Then what is this passage stating? That the bible is the standard in which we will be judged us on the last day!
- Knowing that, wouldn’t it be silly to not know it… now you know what the judgment will be like. It won’t be a pop quiz, it won’t be a surprise, and it will simply be: “Have you held to the Bible, and obeyed Jesus teaching?”
- That is why the Bible is so important!
- That is why it is my standard, what I base my life on, because it is what will judge us on the last day!
Question: Do you feel like you are ready to make the Bible the “standard” of your life? What changes will that mean for you?
Acts 17:10-12
Challenge from the study… imitate these Bereans, “eagerly”, “examine”, “everyday”
Be like these Bereans and dive into the scriptures and study them for yourself. Follow the scriptures because you believe they are right, not because others do.
